11th place for Polanc in Bergamo

Slovenian rider crossed finish line amongst selected first group

Jan Polanc (photo Bettini, before the start) came 11th after he successfully bridged the gap on the final straight of stage 15 that concluded today and crossed the finish line as part of the first selected group of riders.
Bob Jungels took the sprint win in Bergamo to claim the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia while Tom Dumoulin keeps the GC lead.

 

The riders covered the 199 km from Valdengo to Bergamo at a very fast average speed (46,486 km/h), especially in the first part of the course: many breakaway attemps were neutralized, UAE Team Emirates riders tried several times to went clear from the bunch, but only Petilli succeeded to join a breakaway, but he was dropped on the first of the two climbs of the race.

 

Commenting on his finish, Polanc (14th in the GC) said: “Today was difficult, there were a lot of attacks attempts and the breakaway started at 20 km so the speed was very high and most of the peloton was really tired.
In the end my legs felt quite good and I managed to bridge the gap from the leading group on the final straight and finish with the best riders at the arrival.
I’m satisfied for now however know that the third week will be very difficult.
I cannot say how it will unfold as it all depends on our performance and how fast we recover after the stages“.

 

Monday will see the third rest day of the Giro before stage 16 begins in Rovetta markin the toughest and final week of the race.
