Almeida takes white jersey at Giro d’Italia

Ackermann 5th as breakaway stays clear

UAE Team Emirates survived a challenging day on the Giro d’Italia with Pascal Ackermann picking up 5th place in the group sprint after Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education) took the win from the break on the rain-soaked stage from Scandiano to Viareggio (196km).

Joao Almeida took over the lead of the white jersey classification for the best young rider while holding 4th place at just 22’’ behind race leader Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers).
Jay Vine unfortunately suffered a crash on the wet descents and lost time, dropping out of the top-10 of GC but thankfully escaping with only minor injuries.

Almeida: “It was a hard and stressful day out there with really tough conditions. I did a great preparation and I’ve been getting through each day quite well so far. I have some tough rivals but I always believe that I can maybe win it. My goal is the podium and that’s what I’m here for. If it’s the first step then great, if it’s the third step then great as well. ”

Tomorrow the Giro continues with a medium mountain stage from Camaiore to Tortona (219km).
