Fabio hit by virus during the Vuelta a Espana

Further and more extensive exams showed that Fabio Aru was hit by a virus during the Vuelta a Espana.

This virus severely hampered his performance during the race and led to his withdrawal on the morning of stage 13.

Jeroen Swart, team medical director: “During the Vuelta Espana and following Fabio Aru’s withdrawal the team has continued to perform assessments to understand the cause of the muscular damage as seen in the first blood tests and related fatigue and underperformance sustained by Aru. Blood tests already requested prior to his withdrawal and confirmed in the past 24 hours have demonstrated that Fabio has a Cytomegalovirus infection. This can cause severe fatigue and impair performance. Our medical team is working closely with Fabio to ensure his optimal recovery”.
