Gaviria storms home for the win in Poland

Colombian takes fast sprint finish in Rzeszow

Fernando Gaviria took a long awaited victory today on stage 3 of the Tour de Pologne. After a narrow 2nd place from Ulissi on yesterday’s stage, the Emirati squad managed to go one better today with Gaviria taking the win from a bunch gallop.

The team worked hard on the front to neutralise the remnants of the initial large breakaway, with the remaining trio of riders being swept up inside 3km to go.

Expert leadout work from Oliviero Troia and veteran Maximiliano Richeze guided the Colombian into position before unleashing his sprint inside the final 100m to overcome Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious) who rounded out the podium.

Joao Almeida (Deceuninck-Quickstep) remains the overall leader with Diego Ulissi up one spot to 2nd place at 4’’.

Gaviria: “It was a really fast and long day. A big group got away up the road but we were convinced that if we worked to bring it back that we could be in contention for the win. The guys stuck together and did a superb job at delivering me to the right place, even though the finishing circuit was quite technical. Richeze and Troia kept me safe and guided me well. In the end I was able to take the win that I had been looking for. ”

Tomorrow stage 4 will take the riders from Tarnow to Bukovina Resort (159.9km) with a hilly profile.
