Gaviria top-5 in Cuneo as Giro approaches the hills

Colombian 4th, Almeida holds podium spot

Fernando Gaviria just came up short of the podium with 4th place on Stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia from Sanremo to Cuneo (150km).

The Colombian sprinter was well placed in the final, taking the wheel of stage winner Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) after being put in position by Maximiliano Richeze.

The 28 year old found himself squeezed out by Demare and just missed the legs necessary to come around the Frenchman.

The day marks one of the last real chances for the sprinters as the attention now turns to the mountains and the general classification battle.

Meanwhile Joao Almeida continues to sit at towards the head of the GC in 3rd place on the same time as Richard Carapaz (Ineos-Grenadiers), 12’’ behind the Maglia Rosa of Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo).

Tomorrow Stage 14 brings the riders from Santena to Torino (147km) over hilly terrain.
