Hirschi seals final podium in Luxembourg

Swiss 4th on final stage as Trentin cracks top-5 in Memorial Pantani

Marc Hirschi topped off a strong week at the Tour de Luxembourg by cementing 2nd place in the final general classification after sprinting home to 4th place on stage 5.

 

 

The final stage was won by Frenchman David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) who broke clear solo on the uphill drag to the line on the final circuit of the stage from Mersch to Luxembourg-City (183.7km).

 

 

David De La Cruz and Davide Formolo in the same group 11’’ behind the winner to cement their places in the top-10 also with 4th and 10th respectively.

 

 

Hirschi: “ We had a really good week as a team, with many of us in the mix for victorious and also on GC we showed ourselves to be one of the strongest teams. Personally I’m really happy to take a stage win and also 2nd place on GC so for me it was a really nice week and was good to take my first victory of the season and gives me confidence for the next races.”

Meanwhile in Italy, Matteo Trentin sprinted home to 4th place at the Memorial Marco Pantani from an elite small group of riders, with European Champion Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Victorious) taking the win.

 

 

The 196km one-day classic from Castrocaro Terme e Terra del Sole to Cesenatico in memory of one of cycling’s most iconic figures was marked by a breakaway group of 25 riders including Trentin and Diego Ulissi, who were showing their fine form for the upcoming targets.

 

 

The same riders will be in action tomorrow for the Trofeo Matteotti (1.1), which brings an end to the first block of Italian races ahead of the World Championships in Belgium next week.
