Ayuso impresses in Dauphine time trial

Young Spaniard up to 8th overall

Juan Ayuso put in a fast ride against the clock to take 10th place on the 31.9km Stage 4 Time Trial from Montbrison to La Bâtie d’Urfé at the Criterium du Dauphine.

The 20 year old stormed around the course with an average speed of 51.6kmph, 1’34’’ shy of stage winner and World Champion Filippo Ganna (Ineos-Grenadiers).

Ayuso now sits in 8th place overall at at 1’48’’ from race leader Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma).

There was misfortune for Brandon McNulty who suffered mechanical trouble in the early part of his ride, losing time and ruling himself out of the hunt for the stage. He still sits in 20th place overall at 2’35’’ from Van Aert.

Ayuso : “It was a long TT and a really hard one. It was important to pace myself well and I’m happy I managed myself well and did a consistent effort so I’m pleased with my performance. I’m excited for the mountains and I think we’re in a good position. It’s a pity that Brandon lost time today and for sure it will affect how we play our cards over the next days. I’m looking forward to the coming stages and hoping to build on my place in the GC.”

Tomorrow Stage 5 will be an undulating day from Thizy-les-Bourgs to Chaintré (162.3km).
