Bono on the attack again in the Amstel Gold Race

When there’s an escape in a big race, it’s almost certain you’ll see Matteo Bono.

Just like in Milano-Sanremo, the Italian rider of UAE Team Emirates went on the attack in the Amstel Gold Race. He was among the nine riders who ignited the first hours of the 263 km race, gaining over 15 minutes and lasting until the final 20 kilometers.
The big starts took the control only on the last climb up to Cauberg, 20 km to race.  Bono (photo Bettini) still had the strenght to try to gain distance again and gain and stay in the slipstream of the favourites.
Doing so, he finished 17th behind race winner Michael Valgren (Astana).
Rui Costa obtained the 27th place.

“It’s not like I have a particular quality I rely on for the eascapes, but when like today, I get the message from the sports directors that my job is to attack, I’m able to perform to my best,” Bono said.
“The group left us much space and we were fighting to the end. When the top riders reached us, a small move of around 20 formed, where every little break could be important one. So I tried to anticipate things again so I could take an advante, but my legs were suffering a little bit“.
