Conti in the main breakaway, Aru’s quote

Climber from Rome rode in the front of the race for most of the stage

Valerio Conti was one of the 7 riders who led the 14 stage for most of the 186 km from San Vito al Tagliamento to Monte Zoncolan.

The Italian climber from UAE Team Emirates (photo Bettini) eventually went clear from the other attackers on the steep final climb, but he did not succeed to avoid to be reached and overtaken by the GC contenders.
Froome won the stage, Fabio Aru was 17th (+2’23”).

Aru, who’s 13th in the general classification (+ 5’33” from Yates) commented: “I’m disappointed , I felt I was not strong enough: this is not the real Fabio Aru.
During the stage, the feelings were not so bad, but on the Zoncolan I lacked the power and I could not be competitive.
This is not my level, it’s something unusual for me and together with the team we’ll try to search the reasons of this situation.
I don’t know in this moment which could be the best way to approach the rest of the Giro. I know that I’m really sorry for not being able to be at the top, because my team mates, me, everybody did everything in the best possible way and we all made many sacrifices for being competitive in the Giro.
Froome today realized an impressive winning performance. Never say never and I hope things could become better for me too“.
