Ulissi settles for fourth at GP Quebec

UAE Team Emirates rider close to the podium in challenging sprint finish

After some aggressive racing Diego Ulissi fell just short of the podium in what was a nail bitting finale at GP Quebec.

The UAE Team Emirates rider (photo Bettini) claimed 4th place in the final sprint circuit around the Canadian city, preceded only by three riders with quicker sprints – Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb), Peter Sagan (Bora -hansgrohe) 2nd and Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team) 3rd.

The race was largely uneventful until the final three laps, when the 5 rider escape was reabsorbed and the rhythm of the peloton increased.
At 1.5 km from the finish, an elite group jumped away from the bunch : Diego Ulissi together with Julien Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) and Greg Van Avermaet (Team CCC), but the work of the chasers saw it all come back together in the sprint.

The fourth place finish today is the best position for Ulissi in Gp Quebec, where he had previously finished 5th place (2015) and 6th (2012).

“I am very pleased with the result and the good sensations I felt in the race – said Diego Ulissi at the finish line – on the final lap I attacked together with Sagan, Alaphilippe and Van Avermaet and when it all came back together I could still do a good sprint which shows my condition is good. I’m also happy with how the team controlled the race.
Now the focus is on Sunday and the GP Montreal . ”

Attention will now turn to Sunday with the GP Montreal, which takes place over a distance of 219.6 kilometers (18 laps of a demanding circuit of 12.2 km).
