McNulty podiums at Criterium du Dauphiné

American sprints to 3rd in uphill finish in Saint-Haon-Le-Vieux

Brandon McNulty showed signs of growing form to take a fine 3rd place in the uphill sprint on stage 3 of the Criterium du Dauphiné.

The Emirati team negotiated the final kilometres well on the fast descent to the base of the final climb with speeds in excess of 80kmph. The final ascent to the line came inside the 1km point where Kristoff along with many of the other bigger sprinters became detached.

McNulty took advantage of his good positioning and momentum to come from behind and finish within reach of stage victor Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Victorious).

23 year old McNulty will take confidence from the result, particularly in view of tomorrow’s Stage 4 time trial which starts in Firminy with the line coming in Roche-La-Molière (16.4km).

McNulty : “The last few kilometres of the stage were quite chaotic with a lot of fighting to be at the front. The team tried to stay together towards the head of the bunch and I followed. After the last turn I surfed the wheels and a gap opened up on the right and it ended up being a really good sprint for me so I’m quite happy with it.”
