Pogačar second on stage and takes white jersey

First uphill finish - 2nd place and new best young rider on the Tour

Tadej Pogačar showed he is carrying good form as the Slovenian youngster from UAE Team Emirates finished in 2nd place the 4th stage of the Grande Boucle, 160.5 km from Sisteron to Orcières -Merlette with 4 mountain passes to tackle, plus the 1st category final climb.

Stage victory went to Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) who claimed the uphill sprint after a lot of work by his teammate Wout Van Aert. The Belgian imposed a very high pace in the lead group on the last ascent, bringing no more than 15 riders inside the final 1000 meters for an uphill sprint between the big names of the Tour de France.

Pogačar showed his freshness, and opened up with a strong burst of power though was outmanoeuvred by his compatriot Roglic. In any case, the second place on the stage brings with it the prize of the white jersey of leader of the youth classification, with a 6 ”advantage over the winner of the 2019 Tour, Egan Bernal (Ineos Granadier).

As for the general classification, Pogačar maintains the 4th place, with a gap of 11” from the leader Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step).

Pogačar: “To wear the white jersey in the Tour is a really nice moment for me. I wasn’t sure after I crossed the line if I had taken it or not. Wearing the white in the Vuelta was special but this is even more so. Today’s stage was not so hard but the final part was full gas. Primoz was a bit faster than me in the final but I’m happy with my result. The team is good – De La Cruz is still recovering from his crash but he’s getting better. The motivation is really high in the group.”

The 5th stage will see the peloton heading from Gap to Privas, where afte 183 km, the riders will be able to sprint at the end of a long false flat.
