Top-10 for Philipsen as big weekend looms at Vuelta

9th in uphill finish for the Belgian in Suances

Jasper Philipsen came home in 9th place on stage 10 of the Vuelta España from Castro – Urdiales to Suances (185km) in a tricky uphill sprint which was won by Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma).

The stage was marked by a 4-man break which built a maximum lead of 13 minutes. The race came back together in the closing 15km and Ivo Oliveira briefly jumped away with 10km to go along with Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck-Quickstep) before the peloton clawed them back. Philipsen came from far back in the sprint to clinch another top-10 placing on the uphill incline.

David De La Cruz remains the highest placed rider for UAE Team Emirates on GC in 13th at 4’44’’.

Neil Stephens (Sports Director) : “Today suited a few of our guys and I gave Rui Costa, Philipsen and the Oliveira brothers the green light to go for a result. Jasper had good legs but just came from a little bit too far back. We know there is a big weekend coming up with two very hard stages and we will plan to be at the pointy end of the racing. ”

Tomorrow will see the riders go from Villaviciosa to Alto de la Farrapona (170km) over a lumpy course.
