Benoît Cosnefroy takes podium place at the Trofeo Matteotti

Just days after taking his first career win on Italian soil, Benoît Cosnefroy rounded out a positive week of racing with a third-place finish at Trofeo Matteotti. The Frenchman sprinted to a podium place with a fast finish in Pescara on Sunday afternoon.

The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider remained attentive to all sorts of moves along the 195km-long route, before eventually coming towards the finish line as part of a large group. It was from this collective that Cosnefroy unleashed a burst of speed that was only bettered by two riders.

In the end, victory went to Sakarias Koller Løland of Uno-X Mobility, with Ludovico Crescioli (Team Polti VisitMalta) taking second place.

For Cosnefroy, the finish offered another chance to test out his sprinting legs. On Friday, it was a fast finish that took the Frenchman to victory at Coppa Sabatini. That win was a landmark moment for the 30-year-old, with Cosnefroy landing his first career victory in Italy.

This week, Cosnefroy has shone alongside his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates in a succession of one-day semi-Classics. The Trofeo Matteotti brought this block to a close on Sunday, with Cosnefroy narrowly beaten to the day’s honours.

Cosnefroy: “It was a really good week in the end, with four races in Italy. I am very happy to finish this week with one podium and a win. I tried my best but it was not possible to take a victory today. I am really happy to finish these four races, and four big races, with these results.

“It is my first time at these races in Italy, and they were really hard. All of the races made me suffer a lot, but in the end, it was a good week for me and the team.”
