Gibbons cracks top-10 in Turkey sprint

South African in the mix in technical finish

Ryan Gibbons took on a technical descent to the line on stage 5 of the Tour of Turkey to nab 7th place on the hilly course from Marmaris to Bodrum (180.6km).

The sketchy finish contained many bends in the final kilometre which saw stage winner Nico Denz (Bora Hansgrohe) take a surprising win having created a gap along with his teammate Matt Walls who was second. Gibbons tried to fight his way onto the wheel of Walls in the last 500m though came up just short and would fade to 7th place.

Jay Vine infiltrated the main breakaway of the day which built up a sizable lead which hovered around 4:30, before being absorbed with -20km to go. Not before picking up 16 points in the mountains classification to be joint leader of that competition.
