Jhonatan Narváez bags top-10 finish at Tre Valli Varesine
Ecuadorian puncheur continues to show promising legs in Italy, with teammates Brandon McNulty and Narváez both showing well on Tuesday
Jhonatan Narváez bagged a competitive ninth-place finish at Tre Valli Varesine on Tuesday afternoon. There, the Ecuadorian puncheur worked well alongside teammate and current world champion Brandon McNulty, with Narváez sprinting to a top-10 placing in Varese.
The 196.1km-long one-day race was won by Jarno Widar (Lotto-Intermarché), after the Belgian had gone clear alongside Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling) and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) in the finale. Once off the front, the trio contested the day’s honours in a three-up sprint.
Meanwhile, Narváez, well represented all afternoon alongside McNulty, sprinted to ninth from the trailing group behind. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG pair missed a slight turn of pace when Pidcock had forced the leading trio up the road, but nonetheless, both Narváez and McNulty remained competitive – a promising sign for the races to come.
Speaking after the race, Sports Director Fabio Baldato reflected on another fruitful day in the saddle for his UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad.
Fabio Baldato (Sports Director): “We raced well today. There were a lot of strong riders here and we knew the race could be decided right at the end. We did our job during the race and the guys worked well. In the final, Tim, Pavel, Jhonatan and Benoît were all there and tried to follow the key moves.
“We are one of the most watched teams, so often everyone waits for us to make the race. In the end, Pidcock was the strongest on the climb and made the difference. We were just missing a little bit to stay with him and maybe play our chances in the sprint with Jhonatan.
“But the team raced well and there is nothing to regret.”
