Rui Oliveira takes Volta a Portugal race lead with fourth-place finish

In his home race, Rui Oliveira rode into the leader’s jersey at the Volta a Portugal. The Porto native finished in fourth place in stage 1, with his strong sprint enough to move him into first place in the general classification and take over the yellow jersey.

Oliveira succeeds his teammate Julius Johansen as the race leader, with the Dane having spent Thursday in yellow following his prologue success.

Having been runner-up on Wednesday evening against the clock, Oliveira carried this confidence into the opening road stage, and tried his hardest to achieve a first professional victory. That win was not forthcoming for the Portuguese rider, but it was not for a lack of trying.

On the 157.1km-long stage between Lourinhã and Sintra, UAE Team Emirates-XRG carried the burden of doing the work on the front of the peloton. Not shy from taking up the responsibility, Oliveira’s teammates dutifully took to the head of proceedings and set a good tempo, from which the peloton could contest a bunch sprint finish.

In the end, it was somewhat less straightforward in Sintra.

As the bunch came towards the finish, attacks went flying off the front of the peloton. One by one, these attacks were brought to heel, but the might of the peloton was not enough to prevent all. Into the final kilometre, three riders had taken a flyer, and from this trio came the day’s winner.

Francisco Campos of Team Tavira/Crédito Agricola claimed his first professional win, with his teammate Carlos Miguel Salgueiro in third. Daniel Cavia (Burgos Burgellet BH) was forced to settle for second, with Oliveira sprinting to fourth place across the line.

The UAE Team Emirates-XRG man may be disappointed not to have had a clear shot at victory on the day, but he will take solace from pulling on the leader’s jersey. On home roads, this is the highest honour.

Oliveira: “I am really proud to pull on this leader’s jersey in a race that means so much to me. I used to come and watch the Volta a Portugal when I was a young boy, and me and Ivo dreamed of being here someday. So to lead the race is amazing, but we did want more today. I was really motivated to try and take the win, so this just gives us more motivation for the next days.

Meanwhile, it was over to the young Pablo Torres to impress at the Vuelta a Burgos. On stage 3, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG youngster overcame a late crash to make a daring attack and ultimately finish in the top 10 at Valle de Valdebezana.

Stage 3 provided the first test in the mountains for the Vuelta a Burgos peloton, and a chance for Torres to shine on his preferred terrain.

Thursday was not without its challenges for the 20-year-old, however, with the Spaniard hitting the deck on a descent ahead of the final climb. As the peloton swept by, Torres was scrambling out of the grass to recover his bike and continue his race. But it would not stop the young talent.

Just 4km later, Torres was back in the peloton and sensed a lull in the pace at the bottom of the climb. Throwing caution to the wind, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider attacked and hit out for home.

It was an attack that ultimately would not pay dividends, but was an indicator of Torres’ bravery.

As the road continued to rise, Felix Gall of Decathlon CMA CGM powered away for the stage victory, and Torres rallied to the finish line. In the end, it was eighth place for the Spaniard, with the top-10 result marking the beginning of his build towards the Vuelta a España.

On Wednesday morning, the 20-year-old was named in the UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad for the last Grand Tour of the season. There, the debutant will hope to support Tadej Pogačar in his bid to take the overall victory.

Torres: “After my crash, I can be happy with this performance. The fall took me a little by surprise, but luckily I was straight to my feet and able to rejoin the race. When the pace dropped at the bottom of the climb, I took a risk and tried to go, but in the end, it was important for me to do my own pace to the top. I can be happy with my effort.
