Gaviria second best in Tirreno-Adriatico

Colombian 2nd in frantic sprint with Ackermann

It was case of dejavú for Fernando Gaviria who was 2nd in a blanket sprint finish on stage 2 of Tirreno-Adriatico (WT), being beaten to the line again by the German Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) in a technical run-in.

Gaviria suffered mechanical trouble within the final 50km on the road from Camaiore to Follonica (201km) but got back in the bunch quickly and was brought back to the head of the bunch by his teammates.

Gaviria: “We always aim for the win but we can’t be too disappointed with another 2nd place. The positives are that the legs are good and we have more days ahead to try again for the victory. The next days will be a bit harder with the hills but I hope to get through the week well and be sprinting for the win”.

Tomorrow will see the race continue from Follonica to Saturnia (217k) which is an undulating hilly day to favor the puncheurs.
