Ulissi lands silver at GP Montreal

Second place for the Italian rider, 7th Rui Costa

After the 4th place obtained on Friday in the GP Quebec , Diego Ulissi came close to success in the Montreal GP. On the final ascent, only Greg Van Avermaet (photo James Startt) was able to precede the UAE Team Emirates rider in a reduced sprint of  18 riders.

After a quiet start to the race, which saw an early breakaway controlled by the peloton, the race progressively heated up and the laps were ticked off, with Diego Ulissi and Rui Costa in the mix for UAE Team Emirates.

The attempts made by Peters (Ag2R), Cosnefroy (Ag2R) and Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) were neutralised in the last lap, and Ulissi come to the final sprint in second place, which adds to his runner up spot achieved in 2017 and 3rd place of 2016.

The 7th place of Rui Costa completes the good collective performance of UAE Team Emirates.

Diego Ulissi: “I had good feelings during the race and together with Rui Costa we managed to be present in the final with hte leading group.
I started the sprint 200 meters from the finish and had good legs. I did a good sprint, but Van Avermaet was a little stronger.
When you race well and come close to success, there is always a feeling of ‘what if’, but I can also be happy knowing I did a good race.
It’s a good showing before the world championships“.
