Vuelta a San Juan: Ganna gets a fine fourth place

Neo-pro Filippo Ganna garnered a nice fourth place in the second, treacherous fraction of the Vuelta a San Juan. The 149.9 km route started and arrived in Peri Lago Punta Negra and featured three category 3 climbs and a slight uphill arrival. The young time trial specialist was gunning for this fraction and only a late counter attack prevented him from clinching his first success in the top category. Victory went to Costa Rica’s Roman Villalobos (Canel’s Specialized), who prevailed in a three-man sprint against Argentine Ricardo Escuela (A.C.A. Virgen de Fatima) and Belgian Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal).

“I wanted to win today,” said a resolute Ganna. “I had my sights set on this fraction and I felt really good for the entire stage. If I had taken off 50 metres earlier perhaps I would be here celebrating my first success in the pros. Anyway, I am satisfied with my performance and I hope that success has only been postponed.”

Tomorrow the Vuelta a San Juan will hold the only individual time trial in this edition: 14.4 km along the freeway that runs around the capital of San Juan.
